Rwanda: Tour companies decry lack of accommodation

Posted on 20 January 2012 by peter

Rwanda Tour companies

NDOLI Darius-Managing Director Mgeni Adventures Ltd

Rwanda being a country of a thousand hills has got many beautiful things including rivers and lakes, mountain Gorillas, wild animals and many others that attract tourists from all over the world. Rwanda has three national parks which are; Akagera National Park in Eastern province, Nyungwe National Park in Western Province and Volcano National Park in Northern Province.

On 19th January 2012,we visited MGENI ADVENTURES LTD at prince House, Remera-Gasabo district a company that has dealt in Tours and Safaris, Car rentals, Airport pick up and drop off and Hotel reservations for two years but with branches in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Ndoli Darius, Mgeni Adventures Managing Director who is one of the founders and Chairman of EATN (East African Tourism Network) has 11 years of experience in Tourism in addition to attending various International Trade fairs in USA, Europe and Asia as he told the reporter.

Highlighting challenges faced, Darius indicated lack of enough accommodation especially in Akagera national park as the main problem.

“Visiting the Park requires tourists to be there by 6:00am yet it’s a long journey from Kigali to that place. So you need to spend a night around there to be on time” There is one hotel in Akagera which is very expensive and without enough accommodation in addition to poor service delivery, adds Darius.

He continues to say that compared to other national parks in the neighboring countries, Akagera is not well developed yet it has variety to be seen: different bird species, lakes, crocodiles, Hippos among others. RDB-tourism department knows about the problem of accommodation but no quick effort has been made by the government to solve the problem.

In abid to improve tourism industry in Rwanda, Darius request the government to think about Akagera like how other national parks of Rwanda are taken care of or privatize it to Investors to better develop it for the good of the country and residents.

Also, there is a need for Government Tourism Information Centres in different places of Rwanda  because tour companies have to go looking for tourists in trade fairs yet if the GTIC was there, tourists would access easily tour operators and vice versa.

Darius further said that for the local community to benefit from the national park, they should be sent to school or sensitized on how they can work together in cooperatives and make crafts that attract tourists. He advised people in the same business to love and respect their profession because tourism requires honesty, in other words they shouldn’t promise what they can’t offer.

Rwanda: Minister of Trade promised to settle wrangles between residents and wild animals in Akagera National Park

Posted on 19 January 2012 by peter

Rwanda Minister of Trade promised

In a meeting with local leaders in sectors neighbouring the Akagera National Park, Francois Kanimba, Trade and Industry Minister said the government has adopted a policy that is going to put an end on conflicts between the Park and  people whose crops were destroyed by wild animals.

During the discussions, Minister Kanimba said that the compensation policy has already been enacted and will be implemented very soon to compensate those who lost their properties.

An electric wall between the park and residential areas is currently under construction to prevent wild animals from crossing over and destroy people’s crops and sometimes taking lives of unfortunate ones.

The sectors bordering with the Akagera National Park are Nasho, Mpanga, Nyamugari and Mahama.

Rubavu: Former slaughtering place called “Red Zone” to turn into Genocide memorial site

Posted on 18 January 2012 by peter

IBUKA, the main Genocide Survivors’ Association in Rubavu district is seeking financial support to build a memorial site and burry over 3000 bodies that have spent 17 years in Red zone in Gisenyi sector.

According to Kabanda IBUKA’s Director in Rubavu district, Red zone is a place with horrific memories and bad history. Prisoners dug pits where killers dumped/buried Tutsis (dead or alive). Vicitims were told that they were being taken to safety.

From then on, Red zone was considered as a mass grave standing for a memorial site, for there was no other place provided for burying the victims. Kabanda condemned local leaders for being less concerned with the problem.

“It’s not an issue of money but less concern from leaders who thought it was not necessary. We talked over it several times until we were tired. But now the problem will be solved thanks to present leadership” IBUKA’s Director in Rubavu added.

The new leadership set up a master plan indicating where a new memorial site will be erected. Construction of the site which is estimated to cost nearly Rwf 90 million might take long to complete because of insufficient funds available as Kabanda emphasises.

The genocide memorial site will comprise three parts; one part showing the colonial era in the history of Rwanda, the second part will showcase the so-called 1959 revolution and the third part will provide the A-Z details of the 1990-1994 genocide. Kabanda further said that upon completion, the Western Province will take over the responsibility of the site will because it will be explaining the history of the Genocide in what used to be Gisenyi Prefecture, now part of the Western Province.

Mugisha Francois in charge of youth culture and sports in Rubavu district says there is no other source of finances apart from contribution from local residents, banks, restaurants, organisations and other donors. BRALIRWA, the national brewery also pledged to make a contribution. Local residents raised Rwf 12 million from last year’s (2011) Remembrance Week (Icyunamo).

IBUKA has urged genocide survivors in Rubavu district, other local residents and Rwandans in general to contribute for the memorial site so as to offer a decent burial to genocide victims dumped in the notorious Red zone. “We need you to help us each your capacity and sensitize non genocide survivors to help us complete this project that has taken 17 years before implementation”. IBUKA’s boss in Rubavu.

Bodies of victims of the 1994 genocide against Tutsis are still piled up on top of each other in holes and the weapons used to kill them can be seen atop. Construction works are scheduled to commence on January 2012 with hope that it will be completed by 2013 depending on the availability of funds.

Gisagara: Genocide memorial sites renovated, victims revered

Posted on 18 January 2012 by peter

Gisagara Genocide

The genocide victims of 1994 at Kabuye memorial site in Ndora sector and Gisagara district were collectively buried in a small piece of land without being enclosed in a special way due to hard situation, but currently, after a period of 18years,   a more decent grave stands to testify for the historical fact that disgraced Rwanda; a country that has become the only heroine from her ruins.

There are three genocide memorial sites in Gisagara District, namely Kabuye, Kabirizi and Kansi memorial sites including others which were built by relatives of the victims in places where the fallen brothers and sisters used to live before the genocide. However, local leaders say that bodies in family memorial sites must be exhumed and reburied into the main memorial centres.

One of the small memorial sites is located at Gisagara Catholic Church and victims’ relatives in the area have raised concerns over the relocation of the yard, saying that the victims were killed in the church, hence the best memorial site, but others be exhumed and reburied into the main memorial centers. Nearly 4400 genocide victims are laid to rest at Kabuye memorial site.

Semana rock, a tourist attraction in Burera district

Posted on 17 January 2012 by peter

Semana rock

Burera district lies in the northern part of Rwanda, adjacent to the Ugandan border, and between the cities of Ruhengeri and Byumba. It is home to Lakes Burera and Ruhondo, and the Virunga Lodge hotel, which lies between them, commanding views of the lakes and the nearby Virunga mountains, making it one of Rwanda’s tourist spots.

Among the tourist attractions in the district includes ‘semaka’ rock which lies in gisovu cell in cyanika sector. The rock originated from volcanic eruptions that occurred in the past from muhabura dormant volcano.

The rock has a very long cave and is covered by beautiful vegetation. People neighboring the rock said that the history of this rock is not well known but its name is attributed to an old man who lived in the caves of the rock whose name was semaka.

This rock is located 1 kilometer from Musanze-Cyanika road and about 3 kms from Burera Lake. One of the residents Nshimiyimanareiterated that into the cave is a long vent line that connects the cave to lake burera .

He said; “I once passed there with my friends and we came out near the lake, but it is advisable to pass there while with someone who knows the place better because one can die in there if you pass in the wrong route due to many caves down there one can even get lost.”

Because of its location, tourists have visited the rock several times. Among other tourist attractions in this district includes the tomb of RukararwaBishingwe former Rwandan King historically known to be the first black man who killed a white colonialist, Burera Lake, Muhabura volcano,Urugezi swamp to mention.

iPhone and iPad software for Rwanda launched

Posted on 17 January 2012 by peter

For people living anywhere and are not able to make a trip to Rwanda, there is a solution in form of a new phone application called ‘Discover Rwanda’ that you can simply download onto your Smartphone which will give you rare access into Rwanda’s beauty.

The Application which is downloadable on iPhone and iPad was launched December 06 2011 in The Hague, Netherlands, by the Rwandan embassy there.

“The goal of this initiative is to have a modern and up-to-date publication about Rwanda available,” said ambassador Immaculée Uwanyiligira, in a statement released January 16.

“…but definitely also to increase awareness about the diversity of the green and hilly country in East Africa, like the Akagera National Park (savanna) in the east and the Nyungwe National Park (tropical forest) in the south where chimpanzees and other primates can be spotted. Here, a canopy walk was opened last year, where people can walk between the trees at an altitude of 50 meters.”

The application buys US$3.99 (Approx. 2,400 Rwf). There is both an English and Dutch version of the software and also comes in form of a magazine tour of Rwanda.

The teaser text of the brand new app reads: “Always wanted to look one of man’s closest cousins in the eye? Then this app about Rwanda, the land of eternal spring, may be right up your alley, too! Discover more about some of the most beautiful places in Africa in this interactive magazine completely designed for the iPad.”

‘Discover Rwanda’ is the most complete and comprehensive travel app available about any East African country, say the developers.

It basically offers a lovely reading and browsing product, which is very inspiring material for anybody interested in Rwanda’s nature, culture, history and geography. To inform potential investors, the Rwanda Special Edition has a separate chapter about doing business in Rwanda: Business & Investment. As one would expect from an app there are plenty of interactive elements, like maps en links to more info.

The app also offers stories about silverback gorillas – but there is a lot more do discover about Rwanda. The first issue of the app offers content like ‘Rwanda, the green heart of Africa’, ‘The Geological history of the area’, ‘Volcanoes National Park’, ‘Akagera National Park’, ‘Nyungwe Forest National Park’, ‘Rwandas major lakes’. Buyers of the Rwanda-app in the AppStore will receive regular updates with relevant news about Rwanda.
