Karongi: Residents Request for Special Memorial Site

The 1994 genocide against Tutsis survivors in Mabuga sector in Karongi District need a genocide Memorial Site to be constructed at Mabuga Parish where most Tutsis in the area were massacred.

This idea of constructing a strong and well maintained memorial site was brought out on Sunday the 19th.May.2013 in Mabuga sector during the special commemoration ceremony of Tutsis who were massacred at the Mabuga Parish.

The commemoration ceremony started with a night vigil on Saturday the 18th of May and on Sunday morning a walk to remember was made towards Murangara Memorial Site where wreaths of flowers were laid. Murangara Memorial Site holds most of the genocide victims. The commemoration ceremony coincided with Pentecostal day.

Among the many Tutsis that were massacred in Mabuga now laid to rest in Murangara Memorial Site include the parents and relatives of Bernard Kayumba the mayor of Karongi district who was also in attendance of this memorial service.

The guest of honour in this memorial service was Hon. Samuel Musabyimana who was accompanied by other Members of Parliament like Hon. Landrada Umuraza, Hon. Ezechias Rwabuhihi and Hon. Polisi Denis.
