King Musinga’s Palace to be preserved

Posted on 12 February 2012 by peter

King Musinga s Palace

Traces of King Yuhi Musinga’s palace are evidently visible with an elegant tree (umuvumu), which back in the days, represented the king’s residence, still standing as seen in the above picture.

This once majestic palace is located behind the Kamembe Airstrip in Rusizi district. King Ndahindurwa Kigeri V (currently living in USA) was also born from this same palace.

Just like other historical sites of Rwanda, this palace too was distributed to landless Rwandans who still occupied it today. The construction of village estates have encroached the palace land, however leaving the historical big tree standing- which has now raised concerns to the government to preserve the site.

Rusizi District Mayor, Oscar Nzeyimana says that the district is aware of this historical piece of land, and that there are other historical places in Rusizi which the government intends to preserve.

Director of Rwanda National Museum, Alphonse Umulisa says that the “King’s palace should be over which a former Rwandan king lived should be preserved because it is a significant historical place”

He also revealed plans of holding talks with Rusizi district officials to the effect.

It is believed that there are various historical sites in Rwanda which for a long time have not been given attention however the Rwanda National Museum is taking steps to discover them all.

Girinka program (One cow per poor Family) was inspired by the Rwandan culture and initiated by His Excellency the President of the Republic in 2006. The cabinet meeting of 12/04/2006 approved the program as one of the 2020 vision, EDPRS and IDP implementation measures. This program aims at enabling every poor household to own and manage an improved dairy cow which would help the family to better their livelihood through increased milk and meat production and to improve soil fertility of their land for their crops using the available manure. This will not only improve the nutrition, but also increase the earnings of beneficiaries from milk, milk products, meat and sale of manure. This program is implemented in two ways :(i) Girinka y’ingabirano (donation): a poor family receives a cow free of charge. When the cow calves, the calf is given to the neighbour who keeps it and gives the next calf to the next neighbour and so on. This procedure is called “kuziturirana†(credit revolving scheme). The second way is (ii) loan (Girinka y’inguzanyo): an average family gets a bank loan to buy a cow. It is the responsibility of the average family, to be able to comply with the criteria necessary to receive the cow. For example: being able to construct a cow shed (Kraal), the field planted with different pasture species for nutrition purpose, etc… Girinka program was a success and other related initiatives have followed.
